There are a number of important considerations for optimal foal growth:
- The broodmare ration is critically important, with studies demonstrating a relationship between broodmare nutrition and skeletal health and development of the foal;
- Dietary balance is key – the feeding program should supply an appropriate balance of energy, protein, minerals and vitamins for optimal growth;
- Pasture intake needs to be considered – with energy, protein and mineral levels varying at different times of the year;
- Steady growth should be the goal to minimise the risk of developmental problems.
Our feeding programs focus on three key aspects of equine nutrition:
- The provision of fibre;
- The supply of high-quality nutrients to promote optimal health and development; and
- The provision of suitable energy feeds according to the horse’s body condition, growth rate and available pasture.

Example ration:
FIBRE FIRST | Other than pasture, suitable roughage sources might include lucerne chaff and lucerne/clover/rye/meadow hay
|
NOURISH SECOND |
|
FUEL THIRD | Additional feed sources such as highly digestible cereal grains, added protein meals, vegetable oil or a suitable commercial mix may then be added according to body condition.
|
Controlling nutrient intake:
The addition of Nourish-EQ® STUD assists in controlling the intake of essential nutrients in the face of variation in pasture and other feed sources. The high-quality protein meals and amino acids will promote muscle development and will assist in promoting optimal health and skeletal development when offered as part of a balanced ration.
